Mechanism implies this. But an important first person plural intersubjective 
account of the physical reality remains in play.

That is right, but this does not a closed system to emulate something open and 
conscious. If not, a physical universe, which is closed by definition, would 
not been able to sustain any form of consciousness.

I would say, note the plural, that self-awareness is all within the many 
perspectives of many relative bases all coming from an external reality (which 
is just elementary arithmetic, actually).
