American automakers don't seem to have a clue how to make profitable EVs. However, Carlos Ghosn, former Renault/Nissan head, said in 2014 that the Nissan Leaf was already profitable. I don't know whether it still is. Nissan really hit the skids after they pushed Ghosn out. The Renault Zoe, introduced in 2012, first turned a profit at about the same time as the Leaf. From 2018 to 2023, Renault's EVs were just as profitable as their equivalent ICEV cousins. They made as much on Zoes as on Clios, for example. So a smart mainstream automaker can make a decent profit on EVs. Unfortunately Renault is now a playground for Luca de Meo, formerly of Fiat. Surprise surprise, they're losing money on de Meo's nostalgia EVs (R4, R5). David Roden, EVDL moderator & general lackey To reach me, don't reply to this message; I won't get it.
