Good question. I think I read elsewhere that the idea of a flat, upright
windsshield was that it was cheap to make.

But it's not just that. It's a bloody brick. The Hummer comparison isn't
far out of line, except that this is a lot smaller and lighter.

I'm no automotive engineer, but good grief, the entire beast, from roof to
wheels, looks like it has the aerodynamics of a mail truck. So maybe you
pay less for the vehicle, and maybe it uses less energy to manufacture -
both Good Things (tm) - but you use more energy than necessary running it.

Which is, if memory serves, kind of the way the Citroen DS turned out.

Unlike this hulk, the DS was admirably aerodynamic, but its hydraulic
"circulation system" chowed down engine power. IIRC one of my father's
friends had one for a while - this would have been in the mid-1960s - and if
memory serves he said he got 15 mpg. (The same guy had a Borgward Isabella.
I distinctly remember watching him shift its "four on the tree," but I don't
recall him discussing its mpg.)

Another memory: many years ago we had an EVDLite who converted a DS. I
can't recall the range, but it's hard to imagine it was much. Again if
memory serves, he had a separate motor for the hydraulic pump, and had some
challenges keeping it going.

A quick archive search puts that project between 2001 and early 2005.
Owner's name was Mike Hoskinson. And it was a 1970 ID, not a DS.

Here it is in the invaluable EV Album:

Thirty-five miles of range on 16 US-250-HC 6-volt batteries, total battery
mass 1280 lb, 35% of 3660 lb curb weight. That would be about 19 kWh of
storage, so about 545 Wh/mile. Yikes.

Sorry to drift so far off topic!

Getting back to this new Citroen concept, my guess is that some elements of
it will make their way into a Citroen production EV, but probably not the
most radical elements.
