The EVDL isn't really the place to talk computers, but I have to say, that
statement is puzzling. I've used Puppy since 2011, and that hasn't been my
experience at all.

Puppy is pretty good at hardware recognition, but maybe Bruce (assuming he
actually tried Puppy) had something unusual in his machine that Puppy wasn't
optimized for. It can be oddly slow when using old Promise IDE disk
controllers, for example.

Again, I have to disagree. I feel pretty confident saying that Peppermint
wouldn't be a better choice for ANY of Lee's computers.

Peppermint isn't the biggest Linux distribution, but it's pretty hefty, and
I think it would be frustrating to use on a 10 year old dual-core or single-
core machine. Same with Mint, Debian, Ubuntu, and dozens (hundreds) more.

Peppermint's iso is 1.5gb. That would take almost an hour and a half to
download on my medium-speed DSL. Imagine how long it would take for Lee.
Trying a batch of full size distributions isn't so easy when it takes hours
to download each one.

And it would have to go on a DVD, not a CD, if Lee wanted to use an optical
medium - though his machine will probably boot from a thumb drive.

Different Linux distributions have different purposes. If you have nearly
new hardware, by all means install a big OS, if you really think you need
it. But for older hardware, Puppy and relatively light systems such as
Slax, Antix, Sparky, and EasyOS are hard to beat.

The largest current mainstream Puppy is around 330mb, less than 1/4 of
Peppermint's size. It runs nicely and surprisingly fast from a live CD. If
your machine has enough memory, the entire OS can load into memory. There's
no way Peppermint can do that.

And not to start a Linux battle here, but Puppy also doesn't use systemd.

To get more or less back on topic, I agree with Bruce that many of the 20-40-
60 minute EV presentations done as video clips on Youtube could be written
up as a few paragraphs, maybe with a few pictures.

That would waste a lot less of our time, and a lot less net bandwidth. When
you have to pay for your data by the megabyte or gigabyte, you don't want to
spend a lot of time watching someone ramble, stumble, and repeat himself.

I saw a sign on a guy's garage that said "Don't even think
about parking here." So you know what I did? I sat right
there and I thought about it. I yelled up at his window,
"Hey buddy, I'm thinking about it. Go ahead, call the cops.
I'll just tell them I was thinking about something else."
