The National Federation for the Blind (NFB) and the American Council of the
Blind have been vocal regarding the perceived hazard of too-quiet vehicles because blind people use the sounds of traf c to determine when it is safe to cross streets (Sau- erburger, 2008). These organizations have lobbied the government and vehicle manufacturers to build in some type of obvious noise when a vehicle is in quiet, low-speed opera- tion (NFB, 2010). http://www.asse.org/assets/1/7/Fender_0111.pdf Sent from my iPhone > On Nov 15, 2016, at 2:01 PM, Cor van de Water via EV <[email protected]> > wrote: > > Please, no automatic backup beepers. > Have you ever had any construction done near your home at night and all > night long you hear the stupid beep-beep-beep every time the > professional equipment reversed direction? > There are countries in Europe where the beepers must be silenced at > night exactly for reasons like this - noise pollution. > I have lived in India where it is common to have (aftermarket) backup > beepers and it is very disturbing that every time someone tries to park > their car adjacent to your home, you get woken by their backup beeper as > if that is a good alternative for paying attention while backing up! > Please, don't get me started on backup beepers. > Noise makers to help the blind to orient themselves on where they can > expect quiet cars, that is an acceptable approach. > I like Lee's suggestion to include *every* quiet car into this > legislation, not just EVs and I like Elon Musk's suggestion to project a > noise only towards pedestrians actually present. > > Cor van de Water > Chief Scientist > Proxim Wireless > > office +1 408 383 7626 Skype: cor_van_de_water > XoIP +31 87 784 1130 private: cvandewater.info > > http://www.proxim.com > > This email message (including any attachments) contains confidential and > proprietary information of Proxim Wireless Corporation.
