I can't claim any particular expertise with this, so I defer to those who have had their heads under the hoods of Leaves. However, if I were trying it, I'd probably start with the simplest, most direct method - just parallelling a second battery with the first, effectively doubling the capacity. Another approach I might try would be using the second battery to charge the first, sort of fooling the car's brain into thinking it was going downhill most of the time, and regenerating lots of energy. That's the way the add- on plug-in Prius conversions did it. You'd probably need a higher voltage range-extender battery and a buck converter to regulate charge into the main battery. I'd most likely save the battery-switching contactor lashup for a last resort, if the other methods failed.
