Works for me. I about to leave in 30 minutes, the ambient temperate in Montana is 30 F., the battery and passenger cab temperature is 60 F. The cab and battery pre-heaters come on about 30 minutes before I leave, raising the cab and battery temperature to 80 F. using commercial power via a transfer switch.
Never had to use the on board battery pack power for the last thirty four years since I did this modification. Even at -41 F. I had no problem. The preheater comes on for about one to two hours while I was at work. While every body had there engine running, scrapping the ice off the windshield, I was the first one out of the parking lot, pushing through a foot of snow. Year after year I read posts complaining about less range in winter. Mine doesn't change much since I heat the pack to 65F when parked at home. Doesn't take much, 350W max, but the heaters aren't on all the time, boxes are insulated so the cells remain above 50 F when parked outside in mid-20s F for 5 hours. Of course running the cabin heater reduces range, but many times daytime temps are in the mid-30's to mid-40's so I don't need cabin heat (wear a jacket) and range is then similar to summer. I'd also guess that repeated use of the pack at low temperatures reduces pack life. Doesn't seem worth it to save a few hundred bucks. I don't think NIH is the reason, they probably just thought it was an added cost that would improve performance but was not required. In Minn I'd say it's required!
