On Wed. I had a couple of VA appointments which are moving me closer to my
thyroid surgery I hope to arrange to have happen after the Silicon Valley
EAA Chapter EVent
http://eaasv.org

While I doing my usual EVangel shtick of mentioning my efforts to promote
EVs, I do not always get a taker on the topic. But I did that day.

It turns out the Leaf EV I saw parked in the EV parking lot, that I pointed
out to passerby's ('Hey, look it is an electric car) was owned by the Dr. I
had an appointment with that day.

I found out the Dr.'s Leaf EV lease will be ending soon, and while he likes
his Leaf, it is not as good a fit as he would want. He mentioned his
interest in the Kia EV
http://www.kia.com/us/en/vehicle/soul-ev/2015/experience
But that is coming and not available right now.

After some off the cuff discussion, he wants an EV with more room for his
passengers and medium sized dog (something larger than a Leaf). He likes to
drive from the SF Peninsula over the Santa Cruz Mountains to the Pacific
coast and enjoy Half Moon bay (he likes to let his dog enjoy the beaches).

But he mentioned that he has range angst when going up to the city (SF).
After some discussion of what EVs are available, I was able to gather how
much experience he has with charging (this is usually a newbie/inexperienced
mistake: to gather info on all the EVs out there rather than first looking
at what their real driving needs are, and what things they need to learn
more about).

I asked if he had used the level-3 charging his Leaf has. He said no he only
charges at home off 240VAC. He also did not know of plugshare.com (which
shows all chargers, unlike charger brand specific sites/apps that only show
their brand).

While I was enjoying the EV conversation, he was aware of the time he was
using to yak EVs, and kept apologizing for using that time. I could see I
wasn't going to be given the time it took to inform him of the plugshare app
(he is into apps) that would help him learn of all the public charging
(EVSE) out there
http://www.plugshare.com/?latitude=37.775024&longitude=-122.419416&spanLat=1.361179&spanLng=2.644958
So, instead, I encouraged him to come to the Silicon Valley EAA EVent on
the 3rd Sat of Sept. but it did not cause an interest reaction.

When I mentioned that all the spots in the EVent visitor parking lot had
already been paid for by the EAA Chapter, and that the Chapter would be
paying for the EV charging at the EVent held at De Anza
http://goo.gl/maps/SgB8iCollege, that got a little more attention.

However, at the end of my appointment with one more last effort to remind
him of the EVent (people today are pre-programmed to hear things three times
before they will remember), it came clear that the EV he is leasing is of
the lower cost trims that only has the half-powered 3kW on-board level-2
(L2) charger.

I knew this after I had told him that the Leaf EV could charge off 240VAC in
only 3 hours. That peaked his attention as a fact he did not know (yup, the
dealership leased him a Leaf with the cheaper on-board charger, and did not
give all the facts he really needed to know). To bad I wasn't given the
time, I really could have helped that Leaf driving Dr.

Afterward that got me thinking of what EV he could transition to that would
have more room and would offer L3 for the times he occasionally wants to go
farther.

The Dr. said he was not interested in a Tesla-X
http://www.plugincars.com/tesla-model-x
as it was too expensive as well as not that much bigger

The Dr. had mentioned other EVs like what he had heard of (VW

 , etc.

) but he was leery of having to go to one of their dealerships and deal
with another aggressive/uninformed/sales type.

I let him know of the different L3 charging types used, and that his Leaf
used the more available L3 (CHAdeMO, 30+ in the SF Bay area alone

), and that the European EVs used L3 (combo) was currently far few in
number (4 in N. CA)

Since he liked his Leaf, it was plain that Nissan's env-200 e-Van

may be a better fit for him. And its availability is just around the
corner.

Another EV item I not get to inform the Dr. of was the different EVSE brands
and their use-fee rates

Well, I hope he comes to the eaasv.org EVent so I can help him. That is what
I look forward to doing for free at each year's show (helping the public
like a good EVangle should).
