LLMs (I just use Gemini) understand OpenSCAD to the degree that I asked it
to make a 3-jaw chuck and it just did it. It also generates linkage
animations: you can give it coordinates of a complex path and ask for a
linkage that will follow this path. OpenSCAD has a built-in animation mode
where you can watch the movement.

I don't even know if it's possible to design linkages following a given
path in FreeCAD/fusion/solidworks---does anyone know?

BTW, note that OpenSCAD file is essentially a python-like program that will
generate a given geometry. It's inherently parametrized and easy to extend
by hand.
