I think that you are failing to consider that any outward cutting
force is associated with a much larger downwards cutting force.

It seems fair to assume that Sheldon knew what they were doing.

As an experiment you could try taking the retaining plates completely
off and seeing what happens. I would expect everything to work just
fine. You would expect the saddle to ping off and embed in the
ceiling.
