On TLM, expected Erik, but I got rid of the majority of that by putting
tapered gibs in it and ditching the compound. Easily 10 times stiffer
now, but they need re-adjustment frequently FWIW.
But this isn't TLM, its the 11x36 Sheldon, 1500 lbs of well aged, good
cast iron, not that box of cottage cheese that tries to tell me its a
lathe.
Well, I started with a horrible 10" Atlas, then moved up to
a 12" Atlas/Craftsman, then added a QCTP.
All of these things improved rigidity.
Then, I got a 15" Sheldon R15 lathe, all 3500 Lbs. of it.
The difference in rigidity is totally amazing!
Even with fairly small tooling, you have to mess with spring
passes a lot less. I did have to completely overhaul and
rescrape it, but it is now very solid.
But, even with a totally massive lathe, workpiece deflection
is still going to happen.
