One way is to install all the prerequisites to build from source, and then build a run-in-place version from source. This allows you to have a separate version of LinuxCNC that is almost totally isolated from the main installed version. You can select any version going back in time to get the stable features you need.
But, as others have said, you might want to step back and try to analyze the problem a little, to see if it is possibly the way you are using it that is causing the problem.
