No, the encoders have a battery back-up and do know where they are

None of the currently available boards can drive the existing drives.
Mesa have something on the way, but it isn't yet available.

Both Pico and Mesa have drives that can move the motors, but in both
cases the drives are a bit under-specified compared to the original
drives.
