Hello all;

I just ordered a sheet of 1/2" thick phenolic to make pcb pallets from, and
a foot of 1" acetal rod to make those thermally molded nuts from for my toy
mill. Gotta get rid of some backlash if I'm going to etch some more pcb's.

That leaves one other obvious weak point, the length of the sled at the
base of the head casting that rides the post, its too short by at least 2
or 3" and gets wedged on the post, leading to stiction & other smooth
motion preventing problems. I've a mind to order me a cutter so as to be
able to machine the proper angles in a new casting, but have no clue as to
the actual angles used in the original 'micro-mill' as sold by HF a decade
back. Are they 45 degree, or some other oddball angle? And can I use a
flat casting from the local foundry (we have one here) as a starter
material, or should I try to find some meehanite someplace?

That amount of rod should leave me enough to make some nuts to replace the
nook bronze buts in the Z drive too, but since they are adjustable already
by differential thread pitches, I feel I need to address the poor head sled
design first, as that is much the larger PIMA when trying to do Z moves to
.001" accuracy.

And whats the best material for the gib strip? I am not impressed with the
soft steel now used in these chinese toys. Recycled coat hangers or
similar junk IMO.
Cheers, Gene
