I was thinking Modbus would offer the convenience of one or two pair
cabling with the AVR able to set speed, run/stop, direction, but also
return status information. A Modio or Arduino could do this, but I'm
thinking if I can pare the hardware down to just what is needed for a
non-Modbus VFD, I may be able to bring the price down to $30 or $40. On
the other hand there may be no demand for such a thing. In which, I
would just make up a few for my needs. I have one of these on order:

I'd need to add an RS485 chip, some opto-isolators and terminals. The
software could be:

or

A clever way to mount the board inside or on the VFD, as if it belonged
there, would be nice, but I think the best I'll be able to do is have a
separate box, which could bring the cost up.
