If you DO have a tach on the motor, then you are golden!

The tach converter is only desired if there is NO tach present, it is 
clearly a second choice.
Also, a gearbox on the motor is a terrible idea.  Toothed belt reduction 
works quite well and avoids the backlash problem.
Backlash compensation is also a bad idea, FAAAAR better to remove the 
backlash as much as possible.
