If you accepted the default disk partitioning proposed by Ubuntu (which
places all files, including the OS and home directories, on a single
partition), then reinstalling with the install CD will indeed erase your
home directory.
WARNING: This will destroy all data on any partitions you have
removed as well as on the partitions that are going to be formatted.

Before installing from the install CD back up any data that you care
about and restore it afterwords.
