Just remember that specifying the firmware= will download the code directly into the FPGA. In order to have to FPGA download its config from the EEPROM on the board you need to program it first That is what I love on EMC; there is proper, up to date, documentation. As a minus one might state that there is too much documentation to absorb it all ...
