He might mean inches, it isn't clear. I did once have the job of "machining" glass to 0.0001mm but that was done with an Ion Mill so doesn't really count. (and, I hesitate to mention the fact, was the the core part of my PhD). What a recalcitrant and annoying bit of equipment that was. It looks like things have moved on rather in the 20 years since.
