I have been thinking about that for my Bridgeport. I could replace the
ram with a horizontal spindle. I like that the chips clear the work
piece better. Or the spindle could be hung off the ram's accessory
mount, so that the spindle axis is parallel to X axis.

I am a little concerned about what it's like to actually live with a
horizontal. My guess is that the operator does a lot more lifting.

To move the knee, I was thinking of a ball screw with the same
configuration as the present acme screw, except the bevel gear would be
replaced with a custom disk motor directly mounted to the screw end. The
diameter would be as large as would fit inside the knee housing. The
magnets are expensive, so I am trying to figure out how to model the
design so I can have a decent amount of confidence that it would work
before actually making the real thing. A pneumatic counter balance is
planned to reduce the usual asymmetric load.
