Nobody laughed at you Richard. Ted's config uses features in 2.2.7, and
you were gently informed of this fact.
"apt-get update" only fetches the list of available packages, it doesn't
install anything. The apt-get manpage describes this clearly.
When you ran this, do you know if it downloaded the updated package list
from linuxcnc.org? That would be useful information to have to help us
debug your problem.

That is an error from configure. It usually means you dont have a C
compiler installed.
Did you install build-essential, like the wiki page says?
But really, I think this is the wrong way for you to fix your problem.
I think you'd be better off installing the 2.2.7 .deb.
