The fact of multiple distributions is one of the best and the worst features of Linux. It's good because it tends to keep all of them on their toes when it comes to things like quality and ease of install and bug fixes and updates. It is bad because each distribution uses different versions of some critical packages and different file structures that make them totally or nearly incompatible and the knowledge of one system worth less when working with another.
I like the Ubuntu release because it is very easy to use and familiar to folk accustomed to working with a point-and-click or menu driven os. Using an official release saves me from having to make my own real-time capable kernel and emc and then debug the whole thing. For some folk the load of packages supplied and run in the standard release is seen as way to heavy for something that we could run in less than 10Meg on RedHat 5.0. For these folk there are many choices but the best path is not always clear. IMO we all start someplace and work our own systems to where we want them. The least effort starting place is an Ubuntu-emc2 cd.
