This seems one detour too many perhaps?

I would suggest trying `M-x count-words-region` (often bound to 'M-=')
instead.

Downside is, you will have to mark what you want to count beforehand.

And it also counts Org syntax, which may limit the usefulness of the
results, depending on what you need the figure for specifically
