That's something relevant to investigate. Maybe it can be included in the
LaTeX classes.

I think using PNG is because is seems the best fit in the specific case of
DOCX.
rsvg-convert *can* generate PDF with the '--format pdf' switch.
That's how I end up generating my figures sometimes. It's less resource
intensive than using inkscape to generate the PDF, so it was a nice
alternative on a *Net*book (LOL) I used when on the road while writing my
PhD some time ago.
