Nicolas, I think there's a conceptual misunderstanding here (and it could be mine, of course). My bibliography database contains thousands of entries, accumulated over decades of research. In a typical paper, however, I will cite 10-30 of these. Finding the actual paper to cite does require being able to search on not just the keys. The keys, these days, are automatically generated by the journals often.
