I find it very contradictory that I cannot take my small,
pocket knife (blade maybe 1 to 2 inches long or so), but I
can take sharp pointed, metal scissors on board so long as
they are less than 4 inches! As for batteries, I've never
had them question those. I carry several for use with my
ATS3 QRP rig. Usually I just carry AA's, but on occasion I
have carried a 12V 5 amp hour battery on board, and they
said nothing about it.

Agreed, you can go to <http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/> or
in particular
<http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm>
to find out what is and is not allowed carry-on or checked
in the USA.
As others have suggested I would be careful about large
batteries
(larger than a 'D' cell). Spillable lead-acid are not
allowed except
for in wheelchairs for example.
Some airlines have additional information and resources,
so you may
want to check their web sites as well.

international flights, but no SLA batteries)
