There are reasons why that is the case.  It will never die completely, but it already is not the same hobby it was when we got into it.  Other things (social media, cell phones, video games, GMRS, etc) have almost completely supplanted it.  I wonder how many of us here reading this thread have read or generated more emails and forum posts in the past week than we monitored or initiated radio QSOs.
