I don't have an 850S, but you could try an external negative dc supply
(say -9v to 0v) on the radios ALC input. That should vary the output
from zero upwards.
Most of the Kenwood range have a Din socket transverter port on the rear
apron which outputs a couple of milliwatts or so although I suspect this
may be too little drive for the 222 or you would be using it :-)
