Seasonal Field Technicians at Powdermill Nature Reserve A great opportunity to join a summer field crew (May-August) to conduct plant surveys across Powdermill Nature Reserve, the field station of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History located in the beautiful Laurel Highlands (about an hour drive from Pittsburgh). Housing is available on site.
Project Description: The woody vegetation across Powdermill Nature Reserve's 2,000 acres of forested habitat was exhaustively surveyed in 2008-09. Seventeen years later, we are interested in how the forest community has changed due to factors including climate change and invasive species. A field crew of 6 will revisit the >500 original survey plots during the summer of 2025 and collect data on the species and size of trees and shrubs currently living here, giving us valuable insights into how this Appalachian habitat is adapting to these changes. Field and plant identification experience is a bonus, but a passion and interest to learn plant identification is all that’s required. A great opportunity to spend a summer at the field station, learning forest survey methods.
