UC Davis is hiring a database manager in collaboration with the USDA Forest 
Service (USFS). The database manager would be responsible for updating and 
managing the USFS Region 5 Ecology Program's database of ecological data 
collected across the state of California in the 1980s and 1990s. This dataset 
documents historical conditions, including physical, biological, and 
environmental data that provide an invaluable reference for management and 
restoration efforts. The data have also been used to map and classify 
vegetation types and communities. However, the current database needs 
significant revision to improve its accessibility and utility to the USFS and 
our partners. The database manager would be tasked with completing this 
revision.

Location: Work may be performed remotely or in person at UC Davis, depending on 
the employee's preference.

Dates:
Application deadline: December 13, 2024
Start date: Early January.
End date:  May 31, 2025, with possibility of extension depending on performance 
and funding.

Compensation:
Pay: $28.88-$30.66 depending on education and experience. The database manager 
will also receive holiday pay, sick leave, and options for health insurance 
coverage.

Job Description:
The database manager would be responsible for:
1) creating a new or updating the existing comprehensive relational database of 
ecology plot data;
2) reconciling different versions of the database;
3) conducting QA/QC of the revised database;
4) developing user friendly forms for entry of additional data; and
5) determining how to store scanned hard copies of the original data within the 
revised database.

Additional tasks could include: 1) correcting and updating spatial information 
associated with the database and creating spatial datasets; 2) exploring 
options for online hosting of data to allow access and effective distribution 
of data to the public; and 3) developing templates for customized reports and 
data summaries.

General Qualifications:
The position requires experience with and passion for programming databases 
(e.g., MS Access, SQL), as well as a basic knowledge of ecology, biology and/or 
natural resources management. Preference will be given to candidates with a 
demonstrated interest in the use and application of historical and legacy 
ecological data in supporting current management efforts in California. The 
position requires excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, 
reliability, and the ability to work effectively independently and as part of a 
team.

Required qualifications:

  *   Bachelor's degree in a natural resource, computer science, or related 
field.
  *   Experience designing and maintaining relational databases, including 
conducting quality assurance and control.
  *   Experience with SQL or SQL-like language.
  *   Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team 
environment.
  *   Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  *   Familiarity with field survey methods used in ecological research.
  *   Familiarity with biological nomenclature and the California flora.

Preferred qualifications:

  *   Master's degree in a natural resources or computer science related field; 
or a bachelor's degree and two years full-time experience working with 
relational databases.
  *   Significant, demonstrable experience using SQL and Python.
  *   Experience with ArcGIS Online (AGOL), Enterprise, Portal, and the ArcGIS 
API for Python.
  *   Ability to cooperatively develop data processing protocols, train staff 
in use of these protocols, and institute QC measures to ensure data is 
processed accordingly.
  *   Experience with statistical analysis of ecological data.
  *   Familiarity with web development, particularly data visualization and 
dashboard creation.

Physical Demands: The position will primarily be comprised of office work.
