We are seeking a PhD student to begin in Fall 2025. The student will be
supervised by Dr. Tal Ben-Horin, Assistant Professor in the Department of
Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina
State University. This position is based at the Center for Marine Sciences
and Technology in coastal North Carolina.

Research will focus on harmful algal blooms and the ephemeral accumulation
and depuration of algae-produced toxins in estuary food webs. This work is
part of the new NSF and NIEHS-supported North Carolina Center for Coastal
Algae, People, and the Environment (NC C-CAPE). Our center focuses on public
health challenges associated with global change and harmful algal blooms in
coastal waters. The PhD student will work with Dr. Ben-Horin and center
collaborators on real-time monitoring of plankton communities in the
Tar-Pamlico estuary and address how and when algae toxins accumulate in
seafood. This project involves extensive fieldwork, including scientific
diving at Pamlico Sound's biodiverse oyster sanctuaries (AAUS
<https://www.aaus.org/> certification is ideal), and is a great opportunity
for students interested in trophic ecology and natural history with broad
implications for environmental toxicology and public health.

Applicants should have a background in many of the following: marine
ecology, fish and wildlife science, fisheries management, ecological
modeling and statistics, and clear written and oral communication.
Applicants should be highly motivated, prepared to conduct independent
research, and enthusiastic about working across diverse teams to address
critical issues of coastal change.

To apply, please email Dr. Ben-Horin (tben...@ncsu.edu
<mailto:tben...@ncsu.edu> ) describing your interest in the project and
prior experiences that have prepared you for graduate work.

The position comes with a full tuition waiver, a competitive graduate
stipend ($34K per year for the 2024-2025 academic year), and health
insurance. The application deadline is December 1. Review of applications
will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
