Hi Mark,

You are quite right, I am out of date. I hadn't realised that 'ant
fresh_install' now creates a webapps directory, copies over all the
webapps, and changes the ${dspace-dir} variable in the process. I had
pointed Tomcat directly at the build directory which holds an
unadulterated version of web.xml, doh! A mystery solved.

Thanks.

['mvn package' doesn't filter ${dspace.dir} into various 'web.xml's
when following published 1.5.2 instructions.]

Doesn't that job belong to 'ant fresh_install' or 'ant update'? I've
never defined dspace.dir to Maven and yet the final installation has
the parameters fixed up.

I was under the impression that Maven shouldn't need to know anything
about your runtime configuration.
