I wouldn't trust it. IIRC, it was added years ago and given the syntax changes to the SELECT/EXAMINE call since then (e.g. QRESYNC extentsion), it is doubtful the code has been updated to handle these situations. And in a server-caching IMAP server like dovecot, all that SELECT information is not expensive anyway, so any gains would be miniscule.
