The first one has two strings of three characters each, the second has one

Look at RFC 1035 section 5. It's defined just fine, and I every DNS
server I know parses zone files the way it says. If you have
counterexamples of DNS servers (as opposed to provisioning crudware) I'd
be interested to hear about them.
