They're asking for the registry.
Who is asking for it? And more importantly, what will a registry do? As I pointed out already in this thread, the registry won't be complete, it won't be accurate, and it won't solve in any way the problem of collision. So what does the registry do such that anyone cares about it? Normally, a registry is created when it will help the operation of the protocol. The problem here is that there's an _anti_-protocol, and therefore it's mystifying to me how a registry helps anything, since there is no way to know whether a registry will actually help or in some cases even hurt.
which is whether there should be a protocol switch inside .ALT.
There will be, almost by definition, exactly as many protocol switches as anyone wants inside alt. What alt does is itself a protocol switch. I think that imagining that such a protocol switch will then proceed in an orderly, hierarchical way flies in the teeth of the evidence. I fully expect more than one use to attempt to colonize the entire alt space, and to do exactly no registration in any registry as a matter of principle. Do you have some reason to suppose otherwise? I don't think the registry follows the Internet-cops approach, but it sure sounds like a registry as Internet hall monitor. I think the reasons to create alt give us every reason to suppose that appointing such a hall monitor is a mistake, and I strongly oppose the creation of such a registry. As ever, I think it's possible I'm in the rough. But I also don't think you or other proponents of a registry have offered anything like good reasons why this registry is a good idea.
reason for these people to continuously pay money to anyone for something that benefits others.
So there's a reason instead that IANA should pay to maintain this registry without clear evidence that there is a benefit?
