Just because TOR asks for .onion doesn't mean it should be given it.

The TOR project has been distributing software that special cases
the .onion TLD for close to a decade.

If the IETF said "you're wrong, go away", what exactly do you
think they would do?
Who knows.

Here's a hint: They will keep using it, no matter what we say.

We're the Internet Engineering Task Force, not the Internet Religious Task Force. Our job is to make things work as well as possible in the real world. Sometimes that means dealing with situations where the facts are not the ones we would prefer.
