Firebug to the rescue; I got the error as

...filter() keywords must be strings...

so I changed the below
        query = str(request.POST['query'])
        qfld = str(request.POST['qtype'])

(it was earlier unicode(request.POST['query']) )

and it works.

I'm afraid that now it will not support unicode?
