In the last I recall seeing posted from Malcolm ( http://groups.google.com/group/django-users/msg/87f697435fcbe0d6) he's targeting end of this month for rough completion. I think that means when he's hoping to announce the branch is ready for general testing, with the merge back to trunk happening some time later, but that's just my guess based on how the unicode branch was done. Sounds like you'd be a good candidate branch tester.
