A number of people have responded to these points, and I don't want to beat
the dead horse, but I want to make the more general point here. D&I should
not take on tasks that are already covered by other committees. (In this
case, TAC and Conferences)

This is for practical reasons (we already put money aside for these things)
but perhaps more importantly for political ones. We don't want to ever give
the naysayers another reason to say that this group is doing things outside
our charter. Particularly this early in the game.

I don't want to be overcautious and miss opportunities but I also don't
want to get involved in pointless debate around peripheral issues. That
seems to be how these efforts get submarined. Not on the big issues but on
the bikesheds.
