Yea, like you said it's just more feasible I think in your environment 
with the more arcane architectures and OSs alone, performance benefits 
probably matter a lot more at your scale too.

They ditched XMLRPC (THANK GOD!!!) for a REST arch in the .25 series. 
Very load-balanceable (I don't think that's a word).
