Old versions of Visio (e.g. the Windows 3.1 version, before MS bought Visio) used to have the ability to treat groups as if they were inner documents: you could double click (?) to open the group in a zoomed pane, popping up over the main document, and then edit everything inside the group freely. This would be a good feature for Dia. If you are building your own language of shapes for some kind of custom diagram you need to be able to drag each of the composed shapes as a whole, but also still edit some details inside (especially the text).
