In theory this is really only needed if your package contains lots of (smaller) static archives. ar processing is still not super fast, but we have set it up so that really large archives are skipped and any .a files that aren't really archives that contain ELF objects are also not touched. Maybe those heuristics aren't working correctly for your package. Which one is it? I can take a look to see what seems to go on.
