Should we retroactively send a round of "Hey, 1.8.x has been released,
please update translations on trunk and 1.8.x" ?

That is probably a good idea, and since it isn't going to happen by itself, I shall do that myself this time. This does not mean that it is a duty that I am prepared to assume for future releases at this point -- sorry.

Since many translations currently need substantial work, it is not reasonable to ask you to hold the release of 1.8.2 awaiting completions to drop in. Rather, translation updates could be ground for subsequent point releases in 1.8.x.

Can you update docs/community/releasing.part.html or roadmap.html with
a reminder to consider sending a Call For Translations to translators?

Since people seemed to have a preference for automating it via release scripts, I'm going to let someone more familiar with that process and framework to deal with it.
