The best portable version to recommend at the moment is X-ApacheOpenOffice from WinPenPack, available from http://www.openoffice.org/porting/
The PortableApps team, last time I checked, hadn't found the time to update to a recent version yet, not even to share a beta. But the WinPenPack team has been very responsive so far. They regularly provide a portable version within a few days from the official version release.
