Apache Open Office is not Microsoft Office. We make it as compatible as we possibly can but since MS does not tell us exactly how it organises its data that is not always easy. I don't think anyone has ever claimed OpenOffice to be able to provide complex MS documents with 100% fidelity. If you draw your diagrams in a drawing program as opposed to a word processor you will find it more efficient. Then you can put the diagrams into the WP document as .pngs without much risk of things going astray.
