need some rewriting?

Yes! It is useless for first Windows build.
Better is
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO/Step_by_step
My suggestion would be to change the entry page
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO in a
pure index with links to the other topics.

It's already meant this way. It's a page "for impatients" that redirects to the individual pages. It's good to have a page for people who (think that they) already know all and just want to review the build instructions.

Topics are for example:
- For each OS a separate page "Your first build on ..." Such should give
a step-by-step instruction containing all what is needed to get a first,
simplified build.
- Topics, which are special for some OS. For example on Linux using
system libraries, on Windows getting ATL.
- Building special kinds, for example including languages, non-pro build
- Tips to make build faster, for each OS separate
- Tips to avoid building clean all the time
- Tips how to test the own build

These are all good topics. I added some details about --with-lang build to http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO and probably there's more that can be taken from the ancient "devdocs" at http://www.openoffice.org/tools/dev_docs/

And both you and Rob/Jan made other good points, like the post-build documentation and the virtual machine with a ready build environment. We can't do everything in one step, but for example I have a VM that I could clean up and contribute in some way. And for the post-build documentation we can actually expect people to contact this list in the meantime.

What we actually need as soon as possible is that common searches in search engines lead people to
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide_AOO
At the moment, searches will take people to outdated documentation most of the time. The first result I get for "build openoffice" is
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Building_Guide
which is the older build guide; it links (not very prominently) to the new one, but it has a number of subpages that could seem still current while they aren't. The second result is
http://www.openoffice.org/tools/dev_docs/build_linux.html
which is pure archeology. So this is one of the pages where some SEO would definitely help.

Regards,
  Andrea.
