I agree. The time volunteers (thanks!) are spending on deleting spammers
can be better spent in other ways. Let's just make sure that
registrations can be approved easily (e.g., ask them to write to ooo-dev
with "Mediawiki account request" as subject, or similar). We should then
remove the limitation, if still active, on new users not being able to
post for the first days after registration.

Thanks to all for your support. I have drafted a page to be referenced
from a (new) banner:

which still needs links, especially to the Cwiki "volunteers" stuff. If
nobody else adds those, I will try to fix it before the banner goes live
(after the actual change to the wiki). Please excuse my half-speed pace:
running under a terrible cold, making me feel every one of my seventy years.
When a site maintainer makes the change, please tell the list; I'll
tackle the wiki part then.
