I'm working on the distributed tests now. Rather than having a core predefined
in solr.xml, I'm creating them via the core admin API in setup, but I've bumped
up against a bit of an API mismatch here. If you want to create cores on an
empty node via SolrJ, you create a SolrServer pointing at the /solr context,
but if you then want to query a specific core you need to create a second
SolrServer that points at that core. In SolrCloud you can set the 'collection'
parameter to get round this, but in standard multicore Solr that doesn't work.
