The Italian N-L project has tested and released the following versions in recent times: - for Windows with JRE - for Linux-based systems with JRE (RPM) - for Linux-based systems without JRE (RPM) - for Linux-based systems without JRE (DEB) - for Mac OS X Intel The real issue here is that we could save a large amount of space on mirrors by distributing (and even testing) versions with JRE only, as we do for the Italian Windows version. But there are still three problems to solve: 1) Versions with JRE are larger. This is a minor problem anyway: the size increase should be about 15% and a JRE is required for the full functioning of OOo. 2) In spite of the November 2006 announcement by SUN about distributing Java under the GPL license, OOo is still bundled with a non-free version of Java. The GPL implementation should be mature enough now to bundle it with OOo. This would address concerns of people who prefer not to run non-free software on their system, and would allow us to skip the third version in the list above. Moreover, CD distributors would not have to deal with the non-free license of the currently bundled JRE and, as Joost mentioned, we could have a graphical setup application in every package. 3) Not everybody knows that it's possible to avoid installing JRE just by choosing the advanced installation and deselecting JRE. We have all the technology in place to explicitly ask the user if he wants to install the bundled JRE, and to provide a sensible default option based on the current system settings to avoid scaring non-technical users. I would thus concentrate efforts in solving problems 2 and 3 so we can reduce the need for disk space on the mirrors, both for the testing phase and for stable releases.
