Welcome and thanks in advance for your contributions! The best first thing to read is [1]. You have already subscribed to this list, which is a great first step for Commons. Also subscribe if you haven't to the user list and get set up with a Jira account. Then just start checking out code, contributing to discussion and submitting patches. A good place to start at the component level is to look at open JIRAs. Do not hesitate to ask here or offlist if you have any problems getting set up, etc. Regarding time commitment, however much time you have to work on stuff will be much appreciated.
